Beer halls and beer gardens

The niceties of dress and advance reservations are not a problem at the more popular Gaststätte or Bräuhaus – literally meaning ‘brewery’, but in actual fact a beer hall. These establishments usually serve full meals in addition to beer. All the great breweries have their own beer halls in Munich, and beer gardens, too. Some of the most popular beer gardens are in the Englischer Garten, at the Chinese Tower, at the Hirschau, and beside the Kleinhesseloher See. Flaucher, located on the River Isar to the south of the city centre, is also well worth visiting, as are Taxisgarten and Hirschgarten in the west of the city. You can either bring your own picnic along to the beer garden or choose from an array of traditional specialities served up at the various stands.

Weinstuben (taverns), less numerous in the beer country of Bavaria than in other regions of Germany, serve meals and wine by the glass rather than by the bottle.

In a separate category is the Konditorei (a café-cum-pastry shop), the bourgeois fairyland where you can spend a whole afternoon reading the newspapers provided. This is the perfect place for a feast of pastry, ice cream, coffee, tea and fruit juices, with a good choice of wines. Most provide a limited selection of light snacks and salads.
